Aerial Hoop Performance by Ophelie FrenchKiss and Michael Twaites

I am no longer good enough to be a performer…

This is what I kept telling myself for the best part of a decade after I recovered from my extensive surgeries. Between the hugely visible scars on my thighs, my athletic performance down the toilet, the weight gain. the lack of coordination and the medical industry advising against training, I started to believe my career as an artist was over.

If that was not enough, my acrobatics and trapeze coaches who both performed for the Moscow State Circus and Cirque du Soleil felt the need to tell me that no established circuses will be wanting to employ me because I am physically a liability to their business as they want bodies that are not already “broken”.

My heart was crushed, and my soul wept.

Since I was eight years old my dream was to become a circus performer. Eight years and countless hours of training, three international tours, three grueling years of fighting to get back on stage after each surgery, and one injury later, I made the painful decision to call it a day and give up.

My entire identity was attached to becoming a Cirque du Soleil artist. So, it was all or nothing and it became nothing at all. And just like that, I changed careers and took a regular job.

Fast forward to 2008 when I decided to “fake it til’ you make it” by pushing myself out of my comfort zone and becoming a club dancer. In 2014 I took my first aerial hoop act since I stopped training trapeze. I was bad. My moves were basic, my strength was far to be what it is today, my rigging was more than questionable (thanks universe for still being alive) and on the day of the performance, I was so sore I had to ditch some final “peak” moves because I realised whilst on stage that I could not do them.

Do you know what happened?

People applauded, my client congratulated me, and my fellow colleagues were all immensely proud of me when I returned backstage. No one noticed about my missing moves.

I knew that for four days straight I worked my butt off to create this act, I honored the challenges this opportunity gave me and I felt alive while I was performing.

“I am officially an aerialist”, I told myself that night.

Cue a decade of performing around the world, between dancing, fire manipulation, burlesque, cabaret, and aerial, I can say that my career as an artist is making my younger self realise how much more I could actually do than just be a Cirque du Soleil performer.

It took me nearly a decade to realise that being an artist was way more than just an athletic or aesthetic body, and even Instagram often attempts at crushing my confidence even to this day. I still must work consistently on my mindset, telling myself that my artistic identity is no longer attached to who I wanted to become when I was a kid.

FAQ

  • Is this open to complete beginners?

To make the most out of this course, taking aerial hoop classes can help. However, during studio time, you will be taught some moves and how to link them together, no matter your level. You will still be able to explore your creative side and find ways to use the hoop to build something beautiful

  • How is it going to work on the schedule?

Weeks 1, 3, and 5 are going to be led online via Zoom. Weeks 2, 4, and 6 will be in the studio. All sessions will start at 2.30 pm on Saturdays for 6 weeks and will last about 2 hours.

  • What if I miss a session?

It is recommended that you attend all sessions. However, the online sessions will be recorded so you will be able to catch up, on whatever you have missed. You will also be allocated a partner for your creative journey so you can do the exercises together outside the sessions.

The studio sessions are important, but if you must miss the last week when the performance is on, a second round of the course is planned for later in the year so you will be able to have your time then. If you must miss another studio session you can catch up on a 1:1 basis with Ophelie at an extra charge.

  • Can I bring a friend?

It is encouraged as it may feel easier to share your journey with them as partners.
